Among the unconscious responses to trauma under ether anesthesia are purposeless moving, the withdrawal of the injured part, and, if the anesthesia be sufficiently light and the trauma sufficiently strong, there may be an effort toward escape from the injury. In injury under ether anesthesia every grade of response may be seen, from the slightest change in the respiration or in the blood-pressure to a vigorous defensive struggle. As to the purpose of these subconscious movements in response to injury, there can be no doubt-- THEY ARE EFFORTS TO ESCAPE FROM THE INJURY.英文原著 · 《The Origin and Nature of Emotions》
Brown-Sequard records an instance produced by injury to the sciatic nerve. Doyle gives an account of the production of epilepsy from protracted bathing in a pond. Duncan cites an instance of epilepsy connected with vesical calculus that was cured by lithotomy. Museroft mentions an analogous case. Greenhow speaks of epilepsy arising from an injury to the thumb. Garmannus, early in the eighteenth century, describes epilepsy arising from fright and terror. Bristowe in 1880, and Farre speak of similar instances. In Farre's case the disease was temporarily cured by an attack of acute rheumatism.英文原著 · 《Anomalies and Curiosities of Medicine》
"No!" he said. "If the opinions of the medical men are to be trusted, the result of the illness is injury to her physical strength--not injury to her mind. My house is not in London--the air doesn't agree with me--my place of residence is at St. Sallins-on-Sea. I am not myself a married man; but my excellent housekeeper would have received Mrs. Zant with the utmost kindness.英文原著 · 《LITTLE NOVELS》
Angelique endeavored frantically to approach Le Gardeur, and could not, but as she looked over the surging heads of the people she could see Le Gardeur standing up, surrounded by a ring of agitated men who did not appear, however, to threaten him with any injury,-- nay, looked at him more with wonder and pity than with menace of injury.英文原著 · 《The Golden Dog》
One word to thank you. I declare had it not been for your kindness, we should have broken down. As it is we have made out clearly that with some plants (chiefly succulent) the bloom checks evaporation--with some certainly prevents attacks of insects; with SOME sea-shore plants prevents injury from salt-water, and, I believe, with a few prevents injury from pure water resting on the leaves. This latter is as yet the most doubtful and the most interesting point in relation to the movements of plants...英文原著 · 《The Life and Letters-2》
