The newer or Edwardian castles, those of the reigns of Henry III. and Edward I., are concentric--that is, there are several castles in one; so that the besiegers, when they had taken one castle, found themselves face to face with another, still stronger, perhaps, inside it. Of these castles, the most elaborate is the castle of Caerphilly, built by Gilbert de Clare, the Red Earl of Gloucester who helped Edward in the Welsh wars. And it was by means of these magnificent concentric castles--Conway, Beaumaris, Carnarvon, and Harlech--that Edward hoped to keep Wales.英文原著 · 《A Short History of Wales》
She skated up to Mlle. Linon, said something to her, and went toward the pavilion where the ladies took off their skates. `My God! What have I done! Merciful God! Help me, guide me,' said Levin, praying inwardly, and at the same time, feeling a need of violent exercise, he skated about, describing concentric and eccentric circles. At that moment one of the young men, the best of the skaters of the day, came out of the coffeehouse on his skates, with a cigarette in his mouth. Taking a run he dashed down the steps on his skates, crashing and leaping.英文原著 · 《ANNA KARENINA》
(1) A mountain peak near Thebes which took its name from the Sphinx (called in "Theogony" l. 326 PHIX). (2) Cyanus was a glass-paste of deep blue colour: the `zones' were concentric bands in which were the scenes described by the poet. The figure of Fear (l. 44) occupied the centre of the shield, and Oceanus (l. 314) enclosed the whole. (3) `She who drives herds,' i.e. `The Victorious', since herds were the chief spoil gained by the victor in ancient warfare.英文原著 · 《Hesiod, The Homeric Hymns, and Homerica》
With adult persons, when the eyebrows are raised, the whole forehead becomes much wrinkled in transverse lines; but with children this occurs only to a slight degree. The wrinkles run in lines concentric with each eyebrow, and are partially confluent in the middle. They are highly characteristic of the expression of surprise or astonishment. Each eyebrow, when raised, becomes also, as Duchenne remarks,[4] more arched than it was before.英文原著 · 《The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals》
Above him, at the angle of the steep green bank of the terraced garden, was one of those small picturesque surprises common in the old landscape gardening; a kind of small round hill or dome of grass, like a giant mole-hill, ringed and crowned with three concentric fences of roses, and having a sundial in the highest point in the centre. Kidd could see the finger of the dial stand up dark against the sky like the dorsal fin of a shark and the vain moonlight clinging to that idle clock. But he saw something else clinging to it also, for one wild moment--the figure of a man.英文原著 · 《The Wisdom of Father Brown》
