Statistics.--From an examination of 28 cases of spontaneous combustion, Jacobs makes the following summary:--
(1) It has always occurred in the human living body. (2) The subjects were generally old persons. (3) It was noticed more frequently in women than in men. (4) All the persons were alone at the time of occurrence. (5) They all led an idle life. (6) They were all corpulent or intemperate. (7) Most frequently at the time of occurrence there was a light and some ignitible substance in the room. (8) The combustion was rapid and was finished in from one to seven hours.英文原著 · 《Anomalies and Curiosities of Medicine》
By an experiment, of which I intend hereafter to give an account to the Public, I found, that 20 lbs. of ice-cold water might be made to boil, with the heat generated in the combustion of 1 lb. of dry pine-wood, such as was used in baking the bread in the six experiments before mentioned. Now, if 20 lbs. of water may be heated 180 degrees, (namely from 32 to 212 degrees,) by the heat generated in the combustion of 1 lb. of wood, 1.03 lb. of water may be heated 157 degrees, (from 55 degrees, or temperate, to 212 degrees,) with 0.4436 of a pound of the wood.英文原著 · 《ESSAYS-1》
But M. Lavoisier has shown us by his experiments, that the quantity of heat generated in the combustion of any given weight of coal, is greater than that generated in the combustion of the same weight of dry wood, in the proportion of 1089 to 600; consequently, 1 lb. of coal ought to make 40 3/4 lbs. of water, at the temperature 55 degrees, boil.英文原著 · 《ESSAYS-1》
"Yes, and then the body was found in the midst of combustible furniture that was not touched. It seems to me that even the spontaneous-combustion theory has considerable support in spite of this very interesting circumstantial evidence about blood-spots. Next to my own theory, the combustion theory seems most in harmony with the facts."英文原著 · 《The Silent Bullet》
Experiments with Bromine.--Place in a very flaring wine glass a few drops (say ten) of bromine, then place a small piece of phosphorus about one-twentieth of an inch in diameter. Place the latter on the end of a stick from five to ten feet in length. So place it that the phosphorus can be dropped into the glass, and in an instant combustion giving a loud report will be the result.英文原著 · 《American Hand Book of the Daguerreotype》
To determine in what manner a room is heated by an open Chimney Fire, it will be necessary first of all to find out, UNDER WHAT FORM the heat generated in the combustion of the fuel exists, and then to see how it is communicated to those bodies which are heated by it.英文原著 · 《ESSAYS-1》

Well,i ve to tell you That while I do have a theoretical understanding Of the workings of an internal combustion engine, I'm not sure I'm capable of performing diagnostics.美剧 · 《The Big Bang Theory》
