Sir William Thomson took part in the laying of the French Atlantic cable of 1869, and with Professor Jenkin was engineer of the Western and Brazilian and Platino-Brazilian cables. He was present at the laying of the Para to Pernambuco section of the Brazilian coast cables in 1873, and introduced his method of deep-sea sounding, in which a steel pianoforte wire replaces the ordinary land line. The wire glides so easily to the bottom that 'flying soundings' can be taken while the ship is going at full speed. A pressure-gauge to register the depth of the sinker has been added by Sir William.英文原著 · 《Heroes of the Telegraph》
My wonder was how any, ever so few, temperate forms reached the mountains of Brazil; and I supposed they travelled by the rather high land and ranges (name forgotten) which stretch from the Cordillera towards Brazil. Cordillera genera of plants have also, somehow, reached the Silla of Caracas. When I think of the vegetation of New Zealand and west coast of South America, where glaciers now descend to or very near to the sea, I feel it rash to conclude that all tropical forms would be destroyed by a considerably cooler period under the Equator.英文原著 · 《More Letters of Charles Darwin Volume I》

He was still, however, bewildered. "Monsieur," he protested, "I do not understand. This mission to Brazil of which you speak--it can have no great importance. Cannot it be entrusted to some other messenger?"
"Alas! No, my dear sir," was the uncompromising reply. "It is you--Monsieur Pailleton--whom the President desires to travel to Brazil."
The light was breaking in upon Pailleton. He clenched his fists. "I am to be got out of the way!" he exclaimed.英文原著 · 《The Kingdom of the Blind》
