The building of the Cambridge Astronomical Observatory was completed in 1824, but in 1828, when Airy entered on the discharge of his duties as Director, the establishment was still far from completion, in so far as its organisation was concerned. Airy commenced his work so energetically that in the next year after his appointment he was able to publish the first volume of "Cambridge Astronomical Observations," notwithstanding that every part of the work, from the making of observations to the revising of the proof-sheets, had to be done by himself.英文原著 · 《Great Astronomers》
How I should have enjoyed the drive if William could only have looked, as I did, at the young firs on the heath bending beneath the steady breeze; at the shadows flying over the smooth fields; at the high white clouds moving on and on, in their grand airy procession over the gladsome blue sky! It was a hilly road, and I begged the lad who drove us not to press the horse; so we were nearly an hour, at our slow rate of going, before we drew up at the gate of Appletreewick.英文原著 · 《AFTER DARK》
The calm of the fog dulled the mind. Fishing so lonely, they hummed home songs, so as not to scare the fish away. They dreamed of incoherent and mysterious things, as if in slumber, and the woof of their dreams was as airy as fog itself.英文原著 · 《AN ICELAND FISHERMAN》
His was the spell o'er hearts Which only Acting lends-- The youngest of the sister arts, Which all their beauty blends: For ill can Poetry express Full many a tone of thought sublime, And Painting, mute and motionless, Steals but a glance of time, But by the mighty actor brought, Illusion's perfect triumphs come-- Verse ceases to be airy thought, And Sculpture to be dumb.英文原著 · 《Autobiographies》
The mind, unwearied, longs to fly And commune with the wise and great; But that same ether, rare and high, Which glorifies its worthy mate, To breath forspent is disparate: Laughing and light and airy-new These come to tickle the dull pate, This dainty troop of Thirty-two.英文原著 · 《Ballads in Blue China and Verses and Translations》
Dreams, indeed, are ambition; for the very substance of the ambitious is merely the shadow of a dream. And I hold ambition of so airy and light a quality, that it is but a shadow's shadow.英文原著 · 《Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare》
