"Good-bye. I will go and wait for her at the entrance."
He seized his forage-cap and ran. Half an hour later I also set off. The street was dark and deserted. Around the assembly rooms, or inn -- whichever you prefer -- people were thronging. The windows were lighted up, the strains of the regimental band were borne to me on the evening breeze. I walked slowly; I felt melancholy. "Can it be possible," I thought, "that my sole mission on earth is to destroy the hopes of others?英文原著 · 《A Hero of Our Time》
The cliff and Krag vanished. Maskull saw Gangnet struggling in the air - but it was not Gangnet - it was Crystalman. He seemed to be trying to escape from the Muspel-fire, which kept surrounding and licking him, whichever way he turned. He was screaming.... The fire caught him. He shrieked horribly. The two lower classes engaged in herculean play while members of the two higher classes, standing aloof, devoted themselves strictly to the encouragement of whichever party for a moment lost ground or heart. This was in order to prolong the conflict.英文原著 · 《Active Service》

I can't stand leading men at any price!--I have had enough of such people in my time. They are like billy- goats on a young plantation; they do mischief everywhere. They stand in a free man's way, whichever way he turns, and what I should like best would be to see them exterminated like any other vermin--. (Uproar.)英文原著 · 《An Enemy of the People》
