We have used the words "mechanical life," "the mechanical kingdom," "the mechanical world" and so forth, and we have done so advisedly, for as the vegetable kingdom was slowly developed from the mineral, and as in like manner the animal supervened upon the vegetable, so now in these last few ages an entirely new kingdom has sprung up, of which we as yet have only seen what will one day be considered the antediluvian prototypes of the race.英文原著 · 《Canterbury Pieces》
Wyllys's, to be sure," replied Uncle Dozie, boldly. "What is the use of carrying vegetables to Mrs. Wyllys? She has a garden of her own" said his brother, very innocently. "Miserable garden--poor, thin soil," muttered Uncle Dozie. "Is it? Well, then, I can understand it; but you might us well send them by the gardener."
Uncle Dozie made no reply, but proceeded to arrange his vegetables in the basket, with an eye to appearances; he had gathered them all up again, but another object which had fallen on the grass lay unnoticed. "What is that--a book?" asked his brother.英文原著 · 《Elinor Wyllys-2》
My mind has been turned to the subject of fruit and shade trees in a garden. There are those who say that trees shade the garden too much, and interfere with the growth of the vegetables. There may be something in this: but when I go down the potato rows, the rays of the sun glancing upon my shining blade, the sweat pouring from my face, I should be grateful for shade. What is a garden for? The pleasure of man. I should take much more pleasure in a shady garden. Am I to be sacrificed, broiled, roasted, for the sake of the increased vigor of a few vegetables? The thing is perfectly absurd.英文原著 · 《The Complete Writings-1》
I am not an alarmist. I hope I am as cool as anybody this hot summer. But I am quite ready to say to Polly, or any other woman, "You can have the ballot; only leave me the vegetables, or, what is more important, the consciousness of power in vegetables." I see how it is. Woman is now supreme in the house. She already stretches out her hand to grasp the garden. She will gradually control everything. Woman is one of the ablest and most cunning creatures who have ever mingled in human affairs. I understand those women who say they don't want the ballot.英文原著 · 《The Complete Writings-1》
"In the intervals of correcting the press, I am writing a very little book, and have done nearly half of it. Its title will be (as at present designed) 'The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms.' (The full title is 'The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits,' 1881.) As far as I can judge it will be a curious little book."英文原著 · 《The Life and Letters-2》
In addition to the meat and potatoes there was one vegetable in a side-dish and as dessert four prunes. The meat course gone Willie placed the vegetable dish on the empty plate, seized a spoon in lieu of knife and fork and--presto! the side-dish was empty. Whereupon the prune dish was set in the empty side-dish--four deft motions and there were no prunes--in the dish. The en- tire feat had been accomplished in 6:34 1/2, setting a new world's record for red-headed farmer boys with one splay foot.英文原著 · 《The Oakdale Affair》

Well, I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna be able to grow my prize-winning vegetables with that tree blocking all the sunlight.美剧 · 《Desperate Housewives》
Oh, well, I'm--I'm sorry about your vegetables, but that pine shields my view of the purcells' backyard, and if you had ever seen mr. Purcell sunbathe, well, you'd know exactly what that tree means to me. well, I don't want to quarrel.美剧 · 《Desperate Housewives》
