Now I'll give you another--why does a duck come out of the water? for sundry reasons. see, you live on suction, you're like that bird with a long bill, they call doctor, no, that's not it, I thought it was a doctor, because it has a long bill--I mean a snipe--yes, you're a lovely snipe. If I go beyond my own experience, and recall what I have heard him say of his love for sport, etc., I can think of a good deal, but much of it would be a repetition of what is contained in his 'Recollections.' At school he was fond of bat-fives, and this was the only game at which he was skilful. It had never been disturbed: but it has since shared the fate of many other places.英文原著 · 《The Rifle and Hound in Ceylon》

He nodded, and beckoned Joan to follow him up the slippery steps. "It is breakfast time," he explained, as they emerged into the air. "We leave each other alone for half an hour--even the snipers.英文原著 · 《All Roads Lead to Calvary》
In unsettled districts these swallows nest in hollow trees, hence their name; but with that laziness that forms a part of the degeneracy of civilization, they now gladly accept the boxes about men's homes set up for the martins. Thousands of these beautiful birds have been shot on the Long Island marshes and sold to New York epicures for snipe.英文原著 · 《Bird Neighbors》
