___(c) The Process of Isolation
251 The chemical process has its products as a presupposition. 252 The decomposition of water into opposed moments. 253 Oxidation. 254 Nitrogen. 255 Nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon,. 256 Salt. 257 Empirical chemistry orders the products according to superficial and abstract
determinations. 258 The chemical process is, in general terms, life.英文原著 · 《Philosophy of Nature》
He has described in the 'Autobiography' (volume i.), the general nature of these early experiments. He noticed insects sticking to the leaves, and finding that flies, etc., placed on the adhesive glands were held fast and embraced, he suspected that the leaves were adapted to supply nitrogenous food to the plant. He therefore tried the effect on the leaves of various nitrogenous fluids--with results which, as far as they went, verified his surmise. In September, 1860, he wrote to Dr. Gray:--英文原著 · 《The Life and Letters-2》
"The next time we just saved ourselves. I was making some stuff to squirt into filaments for the incandescent lamp. I made about a pound of it. I had used ammonia and bromine. I did not know it at the time, but I had made bromide of nitrogen. I put the large bulk of it in three filters, and after it had been washed and all the water had come through the filter, I opened the three filters and laid them on a hot steam plate to dry with the stuff. While I and Mr. Sadler, one of my assistants, were working near it, there was a sudden flash of light, and a very smart explosion.英文原著 · 《Edison, His Life and Inventions》
As for Rotifers and Tardigrades being spontaneously generated, my mind can no more digest such statements, whether true or false, than my stomach can digest a lump of lead. Bastian is always comparing Archebiosis, as well as growth, to crystallisation; but, on this view, a Rotifer or Tardigrade is adapted to its humble conditions of life by a happy accident, and this I cannot believe...He must have worked with very impure materials in some cases, as plenty of organisms appeared in a saline solution not containing an atom of nitrogen.英文原著 · 《The Life and Letters-2》
"I have been infinitely amused by working at Drosera: the movements are really curious; and the manner in which the leaves detect certain nitrogenous compounds is marvellous. You will laugh; but it is, at present, my full belief (after endless experiments) that they detect (and move in consequence of) the 1/2880 part of a single grain of nitrate of ammonia; but the muriate and sulphate of ammonia bother their chemical skill, and they cannot make anything of the nitrogen in these salts! I began this work on Drosera in relation to GRADATION as throwing light on Dionaea."英文原著 · 《The Life and Letters-2》
"Stop!" Craig thundered. "There's enough cyanogen in this room already. I know your game--the water forms acetylene with the carbon, and that uniting with the nitrogen of the air under the terrific heat of the electric arc forms hydrocyanic acid. Would you poison us, too? Do you think you can put me unconscious out on the street and have a society doctor diagnose my case as pneumonia? Or do you think we shall die quietly in some hospital as a certain New York banker did last year after he had watched an alchemist make silver out of apparently nothing!"英文原著 · 《The Silent Bullet》

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium Everybody!美剧 · 《The Big Bang Theory》
If you multiply that by the atomic number of "N"-- Nitrogen-- You get 14, which is the atomic number of...?美剧 · 《The Big Bang Theory》
