Without any trace of nervousness, she made a careful, deep incision on her upper arm. Maskull expostulated. "Really, this part of it is nothing," she said, laughing. "And if it were - a sacrifice that is no sacrifice - what merit is there in that? Come now - your arm!"
The blood was streaming down her arm. It was not red blood, but a milky, opalescent fluid. "Not that one!" said Maskull, shrinking. "I have already been cut there." He submitted the other, and his blood poured forth.英文原著 · 《A Voyage to Arcturus》

At the base of the incisions they affix small clay cups, like swallows' nests. Over the route they return later with large gourds in which they collect the fluid from the clay cups. The filled gourds they carry to their village of grass huts and there they build their smoky fires of oily palm nuts. Dipping paddles into the fluid gum they turn and harden it, a coating at a time, in the smoke. The rubber "biscuit" is cut from the paddle with a wet knife when the desired thickness has been attained.英文原著 · 《The Age of Invention》

One day we noticed that Memba Sasa was making his incisions in that manner. I went to Africa fully determined to care for my own rifle. The modern high-velocity gun needs rather especial treatment; mere wiping out will not do. I found that Memba Sasa already knew all about boiling water, and the necessity for having it really boiling, about subsequent metal sweating, and all the rest. After watching him at work I concluded, rightly, that he would do a lot better job than I.英文原著 · 《The Land of Footprints》
