A man in a blouse shouted: "Let the peer of France be silent. Down with the peer of France!" And he levelled his rifle at me. I gazed at him steadily, and raised my voice so loudly that the crowd became silent: "Yes, I am a peer of France, and I speak as a peer of France. I swore fidelity, not to a royal personage, but to the Constitutional Monarchy. As long as no other government is established it is my duty to be faithful to this one. And I have always thought that the people approved of a man who did his duty, whatever that duty might be."英文原著 · 《The Memoirs of Victor Hugo》
It was the capture of Burgoyne at Saratoga which brought decision to France. That was the victory which Vergennes had demanded before he would take open action. One British army had surrendered. Another was in an untenable position in Philadelphia. It was known that the British fleet had declined. With the best of it in America, France was the more likely to win successes in Europe. The Bourbon king of France could, too, draw into the war the Bourbon king of Spain, and Spain had good ships. The defects of France and Spain on the sea were not in ships but in men.英文原著 · 《Washington and his Comrades in Arms》
How could it? It will treat you as it treats the Saint of your pool, San Francesco. You know what the sailors and the fishermen say? In the wildest storms, when the sea crashes upon the rocks, never, never does it touch San Francesco. Never does it put out the lamp that burns at San Francesco's feet."
"Yes, I have heard them say that," Vere said. Suddenly her face had become serious. The romance in the belief of the seamen had got hold of her, had touched her. The compliment to herself she ignored.英文原著 · 《A Spirit in Prison》
The sovereignty of the United States is shared between the Union and the States, whilst in France it is undivided and compact: hence arises the first and the most notable difference which exists between the President of the United States and the King of France. In the United States the executive power is as limited and partial as the sovereignty of the Union in whose name it acts; in France it is as universal as the authority of the State. The Americans have a federal and the French a national Government.英文原著 · 《Democracy In America-1》
"Spain--capital, Gibraltar." "Admirable! perfect! sublime! And France, for I am French, and I should like to know to whom I belong." "France," said Toline, quietly, "is an English province; chief city, Calais." "Calais!" cried Paganel. "So you think Calais still belongs to the English?" "Certainly." "And that it is the capital of France?" "Yes, sir; and it is there that the Governor, Lord Napo-leon, lives." This was too much for Paganel's risible faculties. He burst out laughing. Toline did not know what to make of him. He had done his best to answer every question put to him.英文原著 · 《In Search of the Castaways》
The monologue entitled `My Last Duchess. Ferrara' is a good example of the constitution of this art-form. It is one of the most perfect in artistic treatment, and exhibits all the features I have just noticed. Originally, this monologue and that now entitled `Count Gismond. Aix in Provence', had the common title, `Italy and France', the former being No. Italy; the latter, No. France. The poet, no doubt, afterward thought that the Duke of the one monologue, and the Count of the other, could not justly be presented as representatives, respectively, of Italy and France.英文原著 · 《Introduction to Robert Browning》
