I cannot understand what Watson means by the "counter-balance in nature" to divergent variation. There is the counterbalance of crossing, of which my present work daily leads me to see more and more the efficiency; but I suppose he means something very different. Further, I believe variation to be divergent solely because diversified forms can best subsist. But you will think me a bore.英文原著 · 《More Letters of Charles Darwin Volume I》
The central spines are quite variable in number and arrangement. In case there are two they are vertically placed and are either erect and parallel or widely divergent. Even three centrals may occur in the same vertical plane; but more usually the three or four centrals are arranged about a center and are widely divergent. The tubercles are apt to persist and to become naked and corky with age. The axillary wool and the capillary radials are also apt to be more or less persistent, thus giving the whole plant a woolly appearance.英文原著 · 《The North American Species of》
On the way to London, he brooded in his corner on the two divergent emotions he had experienced when refusing her invitation. It is no mere coincidence that such divergent writers as Pietro Gori and William Marion Reedy find similar traits in their characterization of Emma Goldman. In a contribution to LA QUESTIONE SOCIALE, Pietro Gori calls her a "moral power, a woman who, with the vision of a sibyl, prophesies the coming of a new kingdom for the oppressed; a woman who, with logic and deep earnestness, analyses the ills of society, and portrays, with artist touch, the coming dawn of humanity, founded on equality, brotherhood, and liberty."英文原著 · 《Anarchism and Other Essays》
It is fact, beyond dispute, that every year numbers of books appear which strain the average reader's intelligence and sensibilities to an unendurable extent; books whose speculations are totally unsuited to normal thinking powers; books which contain views of morality divergent from the customary, and discussions of themes unsuited to the young person; books which, in fine, provide the greater Public with no pleasure whatsoever, and, either by harrowing their feelings or offending their good taste, cause them real pain.英文原著 · 《Censorship and Art》
