``Observe the nobles and ladies,'' he said, still following Sir Walter, and waving at the towns-people and visitors in the rude grandstand. ``Observe the yeomanry and spectators of a better degree than the mere vulgar''--waving at the crowd on either side of the stand--``and the promiscuous multitude down the river banks and over the woods and clinging to the tree-tops and to yon telegraph-pole. And there is my herald''--pointing to the cornetist of the local band--``and wait-- by my halidom--please just wait until you see my knight on that black charger o' mine.''英文原著 · 《A Knight of the Cumberland》
" 'Well, madame,' returned he, 'when the child is seven years old, an age at which a boy ought to pass out of women's hands'--an indication of entire agreement on the mother's part--'if the child is really mine'--another gesture of assent--'if there is a striking likeness, if he bids fair to be a gentleman, if I can recognize in him my turn of mind, and more particularly the Rusticoli air; then, oh--ah!'--a new movement from the matron--'on my word and honor, I will make him a cornet of--sugar-plums!'英文原著 · 《A Prince of Bohemia》
The Radnors broke up the Mechanicsburg band last year and they're going to try to do it again this year. The musicians blow themselves the color of a huckleberry, and the drummers grit their teeth, and try to pound holes in their sheep-skins. It's the Radnor band got rattled in its time this year. Went all to pieces. The boy snatches, a rest. "Yah!" he squawks. "Didge ever get left?" and picks up the tune again. I wish I could play the cornet.英文原著 · 《Back Home》
"Henry stooped down and got a record from the basketful we'd brought, slid it in the phonograph, and started her off. It was a cornet solo, very neat and beautiful, and the name of it was 'Home, Sweet Home.' Not one of them fifty odd men in the room moved while it was playing, and the governor man kept his eyes steady on Mellinger. I saw Mellinger's head go up little by little and his hand came creeping away from the package. Not until the last note sounded did anybody stir. And there Homer P. Mellinger takes up the bundle of boodle and slams it in the governor man's face.英文原著 · 《Cabbages and Kings》
"Hush, then, my love. Do not cry. Forgive me my rudeness. It was wrong of me. You WILL pardon me, my darling, will you not? There, there, that's a dear," and she took from her handkerchief a cornet of pink paper containing two little cakes and a grape, and offered it me with a trembling hand. I could not look the kind old woman in the face, but, turning aside, took the paper, while my tears flowed the faster--though from love and shame now, not from anger.英文原著 · 《Childhood》
