Besides these, we must mention, in the line of our duty, the notable tragedies of "Tom Thumb" and "Bombastes Furioso," both of which have appeared with many illustrations by Mr. Cruikshank. The "brave army" of Bombastes exhibits a terrific display of brutal force, which must shock the sensibilities of an English radical. And we can well understand the caution of the general, who bids this soldatesque effrenee to begone, and not to kick up a row.英文原著 · 《George Cruikshank》
Kate took more interest in this melan- choly, middle-aged man than she would have done if she had not been on the out- look for her Western type, -- the man who was to combine all the qualities of chivalry, daring, bombast, and generosity, seasoned with piquant grammar, which she firmly believed to be the real thing. But notwith- standing this kindly and somewhat curious interest, she might never have made his acquaintance if it had not been for a rather unpleasant adventure.英文原著 · 《A Mountain Woman》
This psalm admits no other interpretation but of Christ, as the Jehovah incarnate. In any other sense it would be a specimen of more than Persian or Moghul hyperbole, and bombast, of which there is no other instance in Scripture, and which no Christian would dare to attribute to an inspired writer. The word in St. John and the Name of the Most High in the Psalms are equivalent terms.英文原著 · 《Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit etc》
I hear a good deal about doing things on the "spur of the moment"-- I invariably regret the things I do on the spur of the moment. That disclaimer of mine was a case in point. I am ashamed every time I think of my bursting out before an unconcerned public with that bombastic pow- wow about burning publishers' letters, and all that sort of imbecility, and about my not being an imitator, etc. Who would find out that I am a natural fool if I kept always cool and never let nature come to the surface? Nobody.英文原著 · 《Letters Vol. 2》
No, nor I neither; so may mine own house be burned for company. I'll tell ye what: we'll drag the strangers into More fields, and there
bombast them till they stink again.英文原著 · 《Sir Thomas More》
